Group Attempts to Block Sale of Devil’s Garden Horses
The Animal Legal Defense Fund has asked a federal judge in San Francisco to stop the sale without limitation of wild horses gathered from the Devil’s Garden Plateau WHT in October and November, according to a report filed today by Reuters.
The Forest Service announced last month that it would delay the process until February.

Former Wild Horses in Oklahoma
Sherryl Hannah photographed them near the town of Copan, north of Tulsa, on pastures that were probably contracted by the BLM for long-term holding. She said “They aren’t free range, even though they have plenty of land to roam on, those fences keep them safe from the crazy Okie drivers.”

How the Mustang Ranch Got Its Name
Original location was on Peri Ranch Road, about a mile east of Lockwood, NV, along the Truckee River. The abandoned structure appears at 0:35 and 0:58 in this video by roobyroo2000. Even today, the place is vistited by the Virginia Range mustangs.
Current location of the brothel is a few miles to the east, at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, also inhabited by the Virginia Range mustangs.

Paiute Roundup Snares Privately Owned Horses
Personnel from Cattoor Livestock Roundup, Inc., a contractor hired by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, removed privately owned horses from privately owned land last week during a tribal horse gather. The area, known as Palomino Valley, lies between Sparks, NV and Pyramid Lake.
The roundup was prompted by a fire last summer that reduced the forage available to livestock and horses, according to a report dated 01/08/19 by the Reno Gazette Journal.
A woman affected by the roundup said the tribal government and the Nevada Department of Agriculture haven’t acted to address people’s concerns. “All of these people want to deny accountability because they don’t care.”
The agencies that surveyed the damage and recommended the action would have pushed for it anyway, because they, along with their contractors, view these animals with dripping contempt.

Virginia Range Mustangs Eye Eagle Valley Fairways
Several large bands of wild horses have descended into the area above Arrowhead Drive and are feeding near the Eagle Valley Golf Course, according to a report filed yesterday by Carson Now. A herding operation to move them farther into Goni Canyon, northeast of Carson City, NV, was cancelled due to the size of the herd, estimated to be 100 head.

Fort Polk Horses Gunned Down
Five wild horses were killed in late December at the Peason Ridge Wildlife Management Area in western Louisiana, according to a report published today by Pegasus Equine Guardian Associates. The incident was described as intentional, not a hunting accident.

While the efforts of the owners are commendable, they are too late, too far downstream in the process. They guarantee more horses will be removed from western rangelands, because they focus on symptoms, not on causes.
This is also true for the PZP zealots, who think shooting wild mares in the ass with contraceptives is the answer. It is not. It is capitulation to the anti-horse agenda, assent to the wild horse narrative.
Advocacy must be aimed at keeping these animals on the range.
That means pushing back against the public-lands ranchers and those at the BLM and Forest Service who coddle them. Same for land managers at the state level.
